KATSEYE, HYBE’s first official global girl group, has made a bold entrance into the music scene by blending K-pop with Western pop culture. With a dynamic lineup of members from the Philippines, US, Switzerland, and South Korea, aiming to captivate a worldwide audience with their unique fusion of genres and cultures. Let’s take a look at KATSEYE’s music, members, and their concept!
Debut and Impact
KATSEYE’s journey began through a collaboration between HYBE and Geffen Records (currently housing artists like Ann Marie, Camila Cabello, and Olivia Rodrigo), with auditions held across multiple countries to form a truly global group. From over 120,000 applicants, twenty contestants were selected to compete in a reality show called “Dream Academy,” where the final six members were chosen through a series of challenging missions. Prior to the show, the contestants underwent rigorous training in Los Angeles using methods similar to those in the traditional K-pop idol trainee system but adapted for a global audience. Their journey is further chronicled in the Netflix series “Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE,” which offers fans a behind-the-scenes look at their challenges and triumphs.
In June, their debut EP “SIS (Soft Is Strong)” was launched following two singles, “Debut” and “Touch.” The group collaborated with renowned songwriters and producers like Ryan Tedder and Omer Fedi.
Celebrating themes of confidence and sisterhood, “Debut” saw a modest reception. The second single, “Touch,” however, quickly became a hit thanks to its infectious drum and bass R&B elements that highlighted the members’ vocal abilities, instantly blowing up on TikTok and climbing the charts in several countries, solidifying KATSEYE as a promising act!
