Plot
“Vigilante” is about Kim Ji-yong, a disciplined student at the Korean National Police University by day and a relentless vigilante by night. Driven by a disturbing childhood memory of witnessing the murder of his mother, Kim Ji-yong’s path of vengeance is fuelled by fury (especially after his mother’s killer only received a light sentence under the law). Haunted by his past, Ji-yong takes it upon himself to punish criminals who escape justice.
Overall, the series grapples with heavy themes like justice, moral ambiguity, and the psychological toll of leading a double life. Ji-yong’s actions stir up debate and spark controversy, pushing society to reconsider what justice really means. His struggle to balance his sense of morality and thirst for justice reveals how being a vigilante both empowers and torments Ji-yong. As viewers, we are compelled to ask ourselves: Are we rooting for Ji-yong, empathizing with his frustration toward a flawed system? Or has he crossed a line, becoming a criminal who must also face the law?

Cast
- Nam Joo-hyuk as Kim Ji-yong
In addition to the drama’s compelling plot, its star-studded cast has drawn many fans to the show. Leading the cast is Nam Joo-hyuk as Kim Ji-yong. One of Korea’s top leading actors, Nam Joo-hyuk is known for his roles in K-Dramas like “Twenty-Five Twenty-One,” “Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo,” “Start-Up,” and “The Bride of Habaek,” among others. In “Vigilante”, Nam Joo-hyuk’s portrayal of Ji-yong balances the character’s darker, vengeful side with the rational part of his personality. According to the drama’s director, Choi Jeong-yeol, Nam Joo-hyuk’s eyes were essential in showing the boundary between good and evil, as his ability to depict Ji-yong’s troubled character cemented Nam Joo-hyuk as the perfect choice for the role.
- Yoo Ji-tae as Jo Heon
Meanwhile, the role of Jo Heon is played by Yoo Ji-tae, known for K-Dramas such as “When My Love Blooms,” “Mad Dog,” and “Money Heist Korea.” The relentless team leader of the regional investigation unit nicknamed the “Physical Monster,” Jo Heon, is determined to find the vigilante challenging him. In an interview with Korea Joong-Ang Daily, Yoo Ji-tae said, “My character is someone who firmly believes in the need for that system (justice through law) and tries to hold that up. (…) If I accentuated the dramatic characteristics that Heon has, I thought he wouldn’t be very convincing. I wanted to make him more approachable as a person, so I delivered his lines without flair and tried to tone down those characteristics.”
- Lee Joon-hyuk as Jo Gang-ok
Lee Joon-hyuk, known for his role in the hit K-Drama “Stranger,” takes on the role of Jo Gang-ok—a character who manipulates events to support Ji-yong’s mission all while hiding his own ambitions. Lastly, the main cast is rounded out by Kim So-jin as Choi Mi-ryeo. As she reports on his every move, Choi Mi-ryeo’s involvement makes it harder and harder for Kim Ji-young to remain in the shadows. Kim So-jin’s portrayal explores the blurred lines between Mi-ryeo’s duty as a journalist and her fascination with Ji-yong’s vigilante persona. The chemistry between the main cast members is palpable, making “Vigilante” a must-watch for fans of intricate plots and compelling character development.
