Jennie’s Bold Return in ‘Ruby’: A Global Twist

Who is Jennie? 

From being a top idol to a trendsetter, Jennie has made waves in the world of K-Pop. She is best known as the main rapper of BLACKPINK—a girl group that debuted in 2016, quickly becoming a world-class phenomenon for their unique music and powerful performances. She is also a talented vocalist, producer, a global ambassador for Chanel, and entrepreneur. In 2018, Jennie made her solo debut with “SOLO,” which became an instant worldwide hit. 

Jennie’s Album Background

In December 2023, Jennie announced the launch of her own label, “Odd Atelier,” after departing from YG Entertainment. The same year, Jennie appeared on Lee Hyori’s Red Carpet Show, where she revealed her intentions to launch her full-length album. 

In April 2024, Jennie released “Spot” in collaboration with rapper Zico, who told Billboard that her song demos sounded amazing. At the Met Gala 2024, Jennie gave Vogue a small teaser of her upcoming album. 

Then, on June 20, Jennie appeared in the ad for Beats Solo Buds where she raps over a beat and also talks about taking more control over her music while standing up for herself. Many fans believe that this song will be a part of her new upcoming album. Later in September 2024, Jennie signed a contract with Columbia Records while she ran her own label. 

In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Jennie shared insights into her songwriting process, revealing that she spent countless hours in the studio carefully crafting lyrics and recording vocals. Later in November 2024, Jennie announced that her album would be released in 2025. 

Ruby – Jennie Album

“Ruby” is Jennie’s first full-length album after leaving YG and is set to come out on March 7, 2025. It will be released under Odd Atelier, in collaboration with Columbia Records. 

Ruby is set to feature 15 songs, each featuring global artists like Childish Gambino, Doechii, Dominic Fike, FKJ, Dua Lipa, and Kali Uchis. With such a diverse lineup, fans are eager to hear how these collaborations will push the boundaries of Jennie’s sound and further globalize K-Pop.

In the past few months, Jennie has released three singles. This includes “Mantra,” a massive hit that reached the top five on the Billboard Global 200 and South Korea’s Circle Digital Chart. On January 25, she released “Zen,” which captivated fans with its addicting melody and visually stunning music video. Her most recent track, “Love Hangover,” featured Dominic Fike and also gave fans a taste of what to expect next from the Ruby album. 

Jennie’s Thoughts on Ruby

In a Billboard interview, Jennie opened up about her personal journey and emotions in working on “Ruby.” She started working on this album in early 2024. Jennie admits that her journey hasn’t been easy, especially since she’s been on her own. Jennie shared, “It’s not nice to be someone who’s always like I’m sorry I can’t say anything.” 

However, she now feels she’s finally in control of her own artistic direction. One of her biggest challenges has been time management, balancing creative work with the demands of running her own label. But alongside the album release, Jennie has a special treat for fans, a three-city tour to celebrate Ruby’s release! 

The tour will be called “The Ruby Experience,” which will be taking place in three cities, including Los Angeles on March 6, New York City on March 10, and Seoul on March 15. Describing the tour as “intimate and intense,” Jennie aims to create a unique live experience for fans. This will be the first time she performs her new songs live, making the concerts even more special.
