There’s something that sets Korean survival programs apart from other entertainment shows. After all, being able to vote to create your dream idol group is an opportunity that’s just too good to resist. In fact, for many k-pop fans, these shows are the highlight of the year. Well, this year’s highlight was I-LAND 2: N/a, the long-awaited second season of one of Mnet’s many survival shows. Read on to find out more about why this show drew people’s attention and what the debut group will look like.
What is I-LAND?
You’ve most likely heard of I-LAND before. The first season in 2021 was a hit, both internationally and in Korea, producing one of the most popular boy groups today: Enhypen. Compared to other survival shows, the number of contestants is relatively small with just over 20 trainees. However, it works out as the intensity of the competition is still the same and the viewers can get to know each trainee better this way.
Season 2 once again used the iconic concrete cube as the main location of the show, I-LAND. It’s where contestants gather on the first day and the weeks after – for dance practices, singing sessions, and nerve wracking evaluations. Though contestants that do not get voted for will have to move to GROUND, a much less extravagant building. One difference is the change in concept with the addition of Metaballs for viewers to support their favourite contestants, and the mascot NaSURI – a cute pink fox whose mission is to help create the next big girl group.

The Members
So, who were the members that made it into the final line-up?
Originally, the number of debut spots announced by the showrunners was six. In 6th place was Mai, a trainee known for her visuals and hardworking attitude throughout the show. The 5th place was Sarang, who’s known for her lovely personality and pleasant vocals. Koko’s impressive rap and dance skills allowed her to secure her place as 4th. Taking 3rd place was Jiyoon, a contestant that showed the strongest vocals in the program. Bang Jeemin, the popular former contestant from R U Next with charismatic stage presence, came 2nd. In 1st was Jungeun, a trainee many people rooted for due to her undeniable talent in singing, dancing, and leadership.
At the last minute, the judges announced there would be an additional member who also deserved to debut. That contestant was Saebi, a trainee that showed pro-idol level performances despite being one of the youngest. Together, they formed the new 7-member girl group under Wakeone and Black Label, IZNA.
The Group
Knowing the talents of each member, fans’ expectations are high for the girl group’s debut. Set to debut by the end of this year, the group is co-managed by Black Label and Wakeone, raising anticipation that their tracks will likely adopt a YG style – trendy and infused with electronic music. What we know for sure is that their music will be good, especially if they continue in the same direction as the catchy original song produced on the show, IWALY. Recently, they also announced the official fan club name as “NAYA”, further strengthening the bond between the group and their fans.
Conclusion
With I-LAND 2 coming to an end, another new girl group is set to rise to the spotlight this year. Like all survival show debut groups, IZNA is one to look out for with its unique, talented members. Like the meaning of their name, “anywhere, anytime, anything”, they certainly symbolise endless potential as idols. If you haven’t watched I-LAND yet, make sure you do so you can show your support for this exciting debut!
