Our main character is one of these 456 contestants, named Seong Gi-hun. A down-and-out gambler facing crippling debt and personal struggles, including his mother’s worsening health, Gi-hun’s journey into this deadly competition begins innocently enough, with a game of Ddakji played against a mysterious man in the subway. Little does he know, this simple game marks the start of a harrowing experience that will push him to the brink.

The competition begins with “Red Light, Green Light”, a game that immediately reveals the brutal stakes: if the large robotic “Squid Game” doll detects any movement after “Red Light”, players are immediately eliminated (shot). This shocking twist sets the tone for the rest of the series. Despite the horrifying reality of the games, the remaining players, driven by their desperate circumstances, choose to come back after being given the option to leave. As the series goes on, the games become more and more deadly. The second game, Dalgona/Ppopgi, involves delicately carving a shape out of honeycomb candy using a needle. The contestants continue to play a variety of games, including tug-of-war, marbles, and crossing a glass bridge—these games not only intensify the suspense but also highlight the moral and emotional complexities faced by the characters.

Throughout the games, alliances form and dissolve, with Gi-hun teaming up with a variety of characters, including Kang Sae-byeok, a North Korean defector, and Cho Sang-woo, his childhood friend. It’s these evolving relationships and shifting dynamics among the players that add depth to the story and make “Squid Game” so much more than just a death-game survival thriller. As a commentary on human nature, desperation, and the lengths people will go to when pushed to the edge, as I mentioned, “Squid Game” became a global sensation, quickly rising to become Netflix’s most-watched series at the time of its release. The popularity of “Squid Game” led to significant discussions about its themes, especially regarding economic disparity and societal pressures.

Season 2: Plot, Release Date, and More

As expectations are set high for “Squid Game” season 2, Netflix announced that the new season will premiere on December 26, 2024. What’s more, the third and final season is already planned for next year. In addition to Lee Jung-jae reprising his role as Seong Gi-hun, fans can also look forward to the return of many familiar faces in the “Squid Game” season 2 cast, including Lee Byung-hun as the enigmatic Front Man, Gong Yoo as the mysterious subway recruiter, and Wi Ha-jun, who may return as Hwang Jun-ho despite his character’s uncertain fate in Season 1. New faces will also join the “Squid Game” cast, such as Park Gyu-young and Im Si-wan.

As for the plot, “Squid Game 2” will, reportedly, pick back up three years after the chilling events of the first season. Seong Gi-hun is now determined to bring down the mysterious organization behind the deadly games—and, using his winnings as a resource, he begins his quest by searching for the elusive man in the suit who recruits participants in the subway. However, Gi-hun’s mission takes a dangerous turn as he finds himself drawn back into the deadly competition, suggesting that he must once again risk his life to expose the truth and stop the games for good! As Gi-hun dives deeper, he finds out shocking truths about the motives of the organization and the extent of their manipulation. It’s a race against time as Gi-hun navigates through treacherous obstacles and faces his enemies, despite danger lurking in every corner. Will Gi-hun come out on top and put an end to the deadly competition, or will he become just another pawn in the “Squid Game”?

Squid Game Season 2: Theories

As you can imagine, despite the fact that we know a little about what season 2 of “Squid Game” could be about, fans online have been going crazy with their own theories. For example, one popular theory suggests that we’ll meet the “Squid Game” doll’s boyfriend, who could be another eerie animatronic doll featured in a new, twisted game—especially after the “Squid Game” doll became so emblematic of the show. Another theory is that Gi-hun might actually be the son of Oh Il-nam, the elderly No. 1, since, in one scene, Il-nam mentions to Gi-hun that he reminds him of his own son, leading some to wonder if there’s more to their connection than it seemed at first. What’s more, speculation about the Front Man and his brother has also sparked interest, as, of course, many believe the Front Man’s brother, police officer Hwang Jun-ho, (SPOILER ALERT) could still be alive despite being shot in the shoulder and having fallen off a cliff in the first season. After all, we never did see his dead body! Finally, some even suggest Gi-hun might re-enter the games in disguise or take on the role of the Front Man to dismantle the organization from within. With season 1 being riddled with truly unpredictable plot twists, it’s not surprising that fans have been on the edge of their seats, theorizing what could possibly go down in season 2.
